Head of Internal Audit & Loss Prevention

Purpose of Job:

As a subject matter expert, you will be responsible for designing and driving the response to loss risk, by the identification of loss and mitigation programmes, along with strategic plans. You will set the overall loss reduction direction for the organisation, ensuring the application of resources identify and respond appropriately to risk. Providing a solid framework for the consistent identification of loss risk, and monitoring of the effectiveness of interventions accordingly. Ensuring direct reports are suitably developed and performance managed in line with Company procedures, in order to maximise their personal growth and operational impact.

Programme Design & Direction;

  • Ensure that loss risks affecting the organisation are identified, monitored, reviewed, and actioned and that operational plans effectively match threats to people and assets.
  • Ensure that annual loss plans are appropriate for the organisation and that they complement organisational aims, objectives, and strategic pillars as appropriate.
  • Drive resource intervention into identified threat; by virtue of collaborative solution generation, or immediate personal direction in designing and directing methodologies to thwart risk, in particular with a view to reducing Stock Loss and cash loss.
  • Provide oversight into the annual compliance audit and cash check plans. Amend approaches dependant on estate risk in order to better utilise personnel versus threat.
  • To be responsible for agreeing with the CFO and Audit Committee their areas of risk and focus for Internal Audit and to co-ordinate with third parties to action those reviews and follow up necessary actions. This will involve presenting the report to the Audit Committee on a quarterly basis.

Stakeholder Engagement;

  • Through collaborative ways of working, ensure that an effective engagement framework is maintained in order to drive the highest possible levels of collegiate working with impacted stakeholders, in line with the Employee Engagement Strategy.
  • Directly perform engagement activity with the senior population and ensure that the mechanisms exist to support feedback around LP effectiveness and improvement opportunities. Regularly present LP developments, for feedback, to the senior teams.
  • Ensure the maintenance of metrics reporting around localised / national loss risk in a format suitable for maximising the impact and value to Operational stakeholders, Board, and Audit Committee members.
  • As part of the project planning process, enable impacted stakeholders to input into the nature and direction of loss prevention plans.

Leadership;

  • Provide the geographically dispersed LPO’s and the HO based Fraud Analyst with the highest levels of direction and performance management. Implement ‘SMART’ annual objectives and monitor performance in line with Company procedures. Ensure the implementation of a structured performance management framework, which actively supports colleagues utilising both face-to-face and remote interventions.

Development;

  • In addition to day-to-day performance management provide direct reports with professional development opportunities that ensure personal growth and skill set maturity in order to meet emerging challenges and shifts within the organisation. Provide development roadmaps and ensure that personal responsibility is taken for professional growth.

Case Management;

  • Ensure that a wholly fit-for-purpose case management approach is provided for the organisation. Ensure that demanding commercially focused KPI’s accompany case mechanics and that the impact and requirements of timely intervention along with stakeholder updates are considerations at every stage.
  • In respect of ‘sensitive’ / ‘major’ enquires (those potentially involving senior personnel or with considerable organisational impact), then provide personal case ownership and progression, reporting directly to Board members as required.

Budget Bids / Proof of Concepts (POC);

  • As required produce annual/ad hoc Loss Prevention budget bids and evidence particularly the cost-benefit of proposed lines of expenditure. Play a key role in any Loss Prevention POC activity and predominantly around the data mining challenges and likely need to engage 3rd party support.

Visibility;

  • Perform figurehead role in relation to loss matters of particular interest to law enforcement and other official parties. Conduct appropriate senior liaison, as required, in particular, hotspot areas and when gravitas is required to drive external solutions to organisational risk

The Ideal Candidate

  • The ideal candidate will demonstrate evidence of significant stakeholder engagement (to Executive Board level / C-Suite), particularly where that experience includes activity negotiation and the progression of risk activities whilst supporting Operational activity, commercial realities, and seasonal peaks.
  • Have experience of crime triangle interventions (location, opportunity, victim) where positive results can be evidenced in the face of relatively low budgetary spend. In particular, evidence hearts & minds interventions with multi-site employees.
  • Have significant experience in the design and delivery of interventions to reduce cash and stock loss across a multichannel environment. In particular, the experience of grassroots interventions in the absence of mature processes.  
  • Be experienced in deploying risk interventions using matrix resources across Operational field forces.
  • Be experience in and show evidence of risk management thinking, with a basket of experiences, as senior leaders, where risk has been identified and actively embraced in the face of commercial return.
  • Industry linked with the ability to effectively peer connect to identify and address emerging risks.
  • A skilled leader with the experience to work across functions and deliver activity outside of traditional core activity.
  • Experience in leading geographically based colleagues using clear objectives, structured support, and performance management tools & techniques.
  • Suitably professionally qualified, ideally to MSc level or with a career background that evidences continuous professional development coupled with formal and accredited learning.
